Poll: Want video?

A question to all Fuzzy Travel members: Would you like to be able to upload and publish videos in your travelogue? VideoEgg can be easily integrated and looks like a very nice option for managing movies, because it accepts a wide variety of video formats and hardware. However, it does require a 1 MB download/installation before you can start uploading movies, which might not be optimal if you’re in an internet cafe. So… what do you think? You can respond to the question by voting in the poll, and you can clarify your answer by leaving a comment.

I would really like video. I love this blog site for everything else, but I went as far as getting another blog and just using it for video purposes. As far as the download goes, I would plan to download it when I was at a location with decent speed, then keep a copy on my camera´s memory card, problem solved! Of course the upload will take a while… Will the program scale the videos down? Is there another one out there like the one for pictures? Thanks, we can´t wait to share videos!!!!

Indeed, the downloaded program is part of VideoEgg and serves the purpose of converting and compressing the video into Flash format, the best format for serving videos on the internet. Converting and compressing the video on your local computer — before uploading it to the web server — saves you from looong waiting times.

What about some kind of interface to YouTube?

I did give YouTube some thought. However, I think that VideoEgg definitely has some advantages. One is that it can be integrated, so you never have to leave the FuzzyTravel.com website. Another one is that because of the downloaded encoder upload times will be small. VideoEgg clarifies by giving an example:

For good quality encoding on the server, the user needs to upload a relatively large uncompressed file. A movie comes off a DV-camera at about 4.5 MB per second. If a user uploads a thirty second DV movie over a 500kb DSL line, this will take ~37 minutes. Compare this with the 21 seconds it would take to upload the compressed movie with the VideoEgg Publisher.

And finally, VideoEgg makes publishing videos really easy for everyone, because it requires no user knowledge on data formats, precompressing, codecs, etc. (the encoder takes care of all of that).
